This tester is very easy to
use. It operates by making the power to a solenoid
pulsate in such a manner that the solenoid will actually
emit a loud buzzing sound. Before you spend a lot of
time and money hiring someone, or renting expensive
equipment, the easiest thing to do is to try and locate the
valve yourself.
Let's say that valve number 7 can't be located, but you
have an idea of the general location of the valve. -- Go
to your sprinkler time clock and remove the field wire
from the number 7 terminal. Connect one lead from Buzz to
the wire you just removed, and the other lead from Buzz
to the number 7 terminal. Now, apply power to station
number 7.
Buzz will convert the steady power from your number 7
terminal into a power that is being turned on-and-off at
the rate of thousands of times per minute. This rapid
on-and-off motion causes the plunger within the solenoid
assembly to vibrate, thus making the sound.
Go out to the area you believe the lost valve is
located. As you walk around, listen for the buzzing
sound that's being emitted from the solenoid. If you would like to have
the sound increase, remove water pressure from the
system. You can do this by shutting down the MAIN water
supply, and then activate any valve within the system to allow the stored
pressure within the MAIN line to discharge. Once there is no pressure within the
system, the buzzing solenoid has an easier time of
vibrating.
